“As a gay, Latinx entrepreneur in tech, I’ve realized the importance of finding community in organizations that champion LGBTQ+ entrepreneurship” – Adrian (AJ) DeLeón
This past week has been a stark reminder of the injustices that our Black neighbors, friends, and peers continue to face at the hands of a system that has been built to protect the privileged. At Innovare, we stand with the Black community and implore that justice in the name of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others be served.
As we acknowledge the beginning of Pride Month, we also acknowledge that Pride Month is possible because of the Black and PoC transgender and LGBTQ activists that played a vital role in the Stonewall riots. Although this Pride Month will be different than others in recent years, it is still a time of reflection – acknowledging our community’s struggle and what still needs to be done.
As a gay, Latinx entrepreneur in tech, I’ve realized the importance of finding community in organizations that champion LGBTQ+ entrepreneurship and social justice. This Pride Month, I challenge you to learn more about these organizations and support their work, whether it’s following them on social media, attending a virtual event, or even referring a friend. While three organizations in particular stand out in my mind, if you are a member of an LGBTQ organization that you think others should know about, please share in the comments.
- The LGBT Chamber of Commerce of Illinois promotes economic opportunities for the LGBT community by promoting member businesses, championing LGBT business interests, and supporting the community.
- StartOut is a national nonprofit that promotes LGBTQ equality and combats discrimination in the business world. Check out their list of upcoming virtual events here.
- Black Visions Collective is a Black, Trans, and Queer led organization in affiliation with the Black Lives Matter Global Network and the official chapter in Minnesota. Follow them on Facebook
